Chapter Thirty-One

“Holy sh*t.” I fanned myself as I drove out of the parking lot and onto the main road. “Air conditioning. I need it now.” When I walked into the produce cooler, I thought it would be a quick visit. I just wanted to apologize for canceling our date. Then, I planned to run over to my parents’ house to check on my mom. As my hand touched the door to the cooler, something happened. My body ignited. I felt excited to see Ryan. When I saw him at the prep sink, I knew this visit would not be quick.

Chapter Thirty

Ryan “Sorry, I had to cancel our date,” Lola whispered from behind me. I spun around and grabbed her hand. “Is your mom okay?” She had called and canceled just as I was about to turn onto her street. She smiled and took a step forward. “That’s the first thing you want to say to me?” “Um, yeah, did I say something wrong?”

Chapter Twenty-Nine

When I got home from the hospital, I went straight to bed. It was easier than thinking about the hospital or my late boyfriend. Sometime later, a light knock sounded at the door, causing me to stir. Slowly, I opened my eyes. The bright red numbers on my digital clock read 1:07 am. The knock happened again. “Olly.” I sat up and threw the covers off.

“You made that look easy.” I set my fork down and grabbed my napkin. “Oh, and adding a bechamel sauce was new for me.” “And?” Jules put the last piece on her plate, in her mouth. “You may have spoiled me.” I reached my hand across the table and placed it over hers. “It’s next level.”
