Chapter Forty-Three

Focus, Maya. Nobody cares about the crush you have on the man sitting next to you. I cleared my throat. “Um, hey.” Yeah, this was going to be awkward. Of course, he remembered me. In high school, my crush on him ran so deep that I wrote his name on my shoes with my favorite teal blue marker (the same color as his eyes). “Mr. Martin said someone is stalking you.” He was holding a small notepad and a pen. “Is it anyone you know?”

Present Day: When Maya showed up at Lola and Olly’s Parents’ house. Lola’s mom encouraged me to sit down, so I did. I was still trying to process the last 12 hours and felt light on my feet. “Thank you, Mrs. Martin.” I cleared my throat. “Sorry to interrupt. I just…” Normally, whenever I was in the same room with Olly, I felt anger and jealousy. Today, when he answered the door, my mind was so focused on one thing that I didn’t initially register that it was him. My full focus was on talking to Lola.

Mocha had joined me and now had her front paws resting on the windowsill next to me. “He can’t be the only one who has a crap bumper.” My cat meowed like she was agreeing with me. I turned and plopped down onto the bed. I might have been overreacting.

Chapter Forty

12 hours earlier… Creak… My eyes flew open, and I sat up in bed. I heard a sound in my apartment. I couldn’t discern exactly what it was, but my instincts told me it could be someone walking on the hardwood flooring. After several internal arguments about whether I should get up to check if someone was in the house, I decided to sit on my bed a little longer. That felt like the safer option. Every suspense movie I’ve watched flashed through my mind. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the person who got up seemed to die or get attacked in some horrible way.
