Chapter Forty-Seven

At Maya’s house… “Maya, I think he’s back.” I closed the front door and set two cases down near the kitchen table. “Can you confirm it’s him in the parking lot?” “Seriously?” Maya straightened and turned to walk down the hallway toward her bedroom. “Wait.” I lightly touched my hand on her shoulder. “Are your blinds closed in your room?” The sentence made me want to laugh. I had to hide my amusement. It felt like a sentence I would say if we were a couple. Which we were not, so I needed to clear my head of those thoughts. “Because I don’t want him to see me in your bedroom.”

Chapter Forty-Six

On his way to Maya’s house… “Is the same girl you had a crush on in high school?” My mom asked. She called me last night, but I was asleep on the couch and missed the call. She hated when I didn’t call back quickly, so I figured I would fill the fifteen-minute drive to Maya’s house. “No, well, maybe.” I sighed, trying to remember if I had ever talked about Maya with my mom. “If I told you about her, you were the only one who knew.” I was a jock who spent a lot of time on a football field. Maya spent a lot of time behind the school smoking cigarettes and doing who knows what. “It doesn’t matter because we were so different; it would never have worked out.”

Chapter Forty-Five

It took less than two minutes to drive to Maya’s house. On the way, Lola shared how her and Maya were at each other’s house almost every night during the summer months. When they were in school, they spent every weekend together. “She moved here when I started Kindergarten.” She grabbed the handles on her purse. “We sat together on the bus and when we were old enough, we walked home.” She laughed. “We decided which house to walk to by who’s mom made dessert the night before.” “Wow, you both are very smart.” I glanced over to Lola and smiled. “Exactly.” She turned in her seat to face me. “Our mom’s loved to make desserts. Sometimes, they both made something the night before, so we had to pick which one we wanted more.” “You were serious about your sweets.” I laughed.

Chapter Forty-Four

“So.” I grabbed the last forkful of Chilaquiles on my plate. “Thoughts?” I pointed at Ryan’s plate, which was almost empty, too. His mouth was full when I asked the question. “Um.” He raised his eyebrows and finished chewing. “That’s dangerous.” “Dangerously good, right?” I laughed. “Exactly.” He set his fork down and leaned back in his chair. “I can’t believe it’s my first time trying the recipe. I’ve been missing out all these years.” “We can make it every week if that helps.” I inched closer and leaned my body against his. “Or twice a week if you want.”
