Chapter Eleven

“Well, it’s now or never.” I was sitting in my car in the parking for the produce stand. Olly was holding a box and carefully unloading vine-ripened tomatoes. As I placed my hand on the door to open it, several tomatoes fell from the stack he was working on. I could see his mouth moving and all the curse words escaping his lips. A tomato rolled a few feet from the front of my car. It was a sign to get out and talk to the man. “I think this belongs to you.” I was standing directly behind him, holding the tomato in my hand.

Chapter Ten

One week later… “I forgot to ask, how was the date?” Luna took a forkful of apple crisp and moaned. “Date? What date?” I had not gone out with anyone in ages. “Wait, are you talking about when I made tortillas with Olly and his mom?” “Um, duh.” She rolled her eyes and let her head fall back.  “That wasn’t a date.” I stuck my fork through a slice of apple.

Chapter Nine

“I’m so sorry, Oll.” Lola was holding a tomato and begging for my forgiveness. I was just trying to forget about what happened two nights ago, but my sister planned to remind me of every last detail. “Sure. Whatever.” I put apples in a bag for a customer. “Thank you, Mrs. Anderson. It was nice to see you again.” The woman smiled and glanced between my sister and me. “I’m busy today, Lola.” “Maya can be a bitch, I know.” She followed behind me as I walked over and rearranged the stack of apples. “You know how she’s had a thing for you forever.”

Chapter Eight

“Um, your tortillas are amazing, Maria.” I ripped off another piece. “Now I get why they’re in high demand.” “You made that batch.” She patted my hand. “So those are your tortillas.” “I couldn’t have done this–” I held up a piece between my fingers– “on my own.” “It was fun making them with you and Olly.” She reached into the center of the table and grabbed one for herself.
